I’ve never known greater freedom than that I enjoyed as a child. Back then we children used to meet up on hot august evenings to ride our bicycles. Sometimes, we’d imagine we were cowboys in the Wild West looking for adventures. The streets where we lived were our territory and our bashed up old bicycles were our horses that we rode at full gallop. There were plenty of falls, small accidents, scratches and cuts and bruises on our arms and legs. Non-stop play gave us a taste of the true value of freedom, of what it is to feel free, to fall and get back up. It’s the only way children learn, and the only thing that shapes boys into men.

No he conocido mayor libertad que la que tuve en mi niñez. En las tardes calurosas de agosto, los chicos quedábamos para montar en bicicleta. De vez en cuando, imaginábamos que éramos unos vaqueros del salvaje Oeste en busca de aventuras; aquel territorio eran las calles de nuestro barrio; y los caballos eran unas destartaladas bicicletas que llevábamos siempre al galope. No faltaban las caídas, los pequeños accidentes, los arañazos y las ligeras heridas en los brazos y las piernas. Así, entre juegos sin descanso, saboreábamos el valor de la libertad de sentir. Ser libre, caer y luego levantarse: solo así los niños aprenden, solo así empiezan a forjarse las personas.
