Momo (Excerpt) by Michael Ende (1973).

Beppo explained to Momo that life can become a labyrinth if one allows oneself to be swept away by the hurried pace of others.

“Every person has their own rhythm,” he said while carefully sweeping a line of dust. “If you follow the rhythm of others, you end up living a story that isn’t your own.”

Momo listened to him in silence, marveling at the serenity of his movements. She understood that it is not about moving fast, but about moving with meaning. And that finding your own pace is a form of freedom that no one can take away from you.

Beppo paused, leaning on his broom, and added with a calm smile:
“When the path seems too long, don’t look at the whole street. Look only at the next step. And then the next one. That way, without realizing it, you arrive where you wanted… and sometimes even a little further.”

Momo felt that those words restored a calm to her that she didn’t know she had lost. They weren’t just talking about sweeping streets, but about living. About taking care of time, listening to who you are, and not getting lost in the noise of what is urgent.

And she understood that patience is recognizing what has true value and not allowing the urgent to eclipse the valuable.
