During the government I was in charge of leading, we sought to correct this situation, to restore citizens’ Trust and Hope. Did we manage to do it? I’m not entirely sure, although I think we succeeded at least for a while, hopefully long enough to demonstrate that another way of governing ourselves is possible.
Perhaps the best way to describe the bittersweet aftertaste left by the four-block walk on July 28, 2021, and the eight months and ten days that preceded it, are the words Marguerite Yourcenar used for Roman emperor in her Memoirs of Hadrian:
“But precisely because I expect little from the human condition, periods of happiness, partial progress, efforts at renewal and continuity seem to me like so many wonders, compensating for the immense accumulation of evils, failures, and errors. Catastrophes and ruins will come; disorder will triumph, but also, from time to time, order. Peace will reign again between periods of war; the words liberty, humanity, and justice will here and there regain the meaning we have tried to give them”.

Texto en lengua original: “En el Gobierno que me tocó encabezar tratamos de corregir esta situación, de restaurar la confianza y la esperanza de la ciudadanía. ¿Logramos hacerlo? No estoy del todo seguro, aunque creo que lo conseguimos al menos por un tiempo, ojalá lo suficientemente largo como para demostrar que otra forma de gobernarnos es posible.
Quizás la mejor manera de describir el sabor agridulce que me dejaron el recorrido de cuatro cuadras el 28 de julio de 2021 y los ocho meses y diez días que le precedieron son las palabras que Marguerite Yourcenar puso en boca del emperador romano en sus Memorias de Adriano:
“Pero precisamente porque espero poco de la condición humana, los períodos de felicidad, los progresos parciales, los esfuerzos de reanudación y de continuidad me parecen otros tantos prodigios, que compensan la inmensa acumulación de males, fracasos y error. Vendrán las catástrofes y las ruinas; el desorden triunfará, pero también, de tiempo en tiempo, el orden. La paz reinará otra vez entre períodos de guerra; las palabras libertad, humanidad y justicia recobrarán aquí y allí el sentido que hemos tratado de darles”.
