Freedom, Sancho, is one of the most precious gifts that heaven has given to humankind; neither the treasures hidden in the earth nor those concealed beneath the sea can compare with it. For freedom, as for honor, one may and should risk one’s life; and, on the contrary, captivity is the greatest evil that can befall men.
I say this, Sancho, because you have well seen the comfort and abundance we have enjoyed in this castle we are leaving; yet in the midst of those rich banquets and those chilled drinks, it seemed to me that I was confined in the straits of hunger, because I did not enjoy them with the freedom I would have if they had been mine;
for the obligations that come with repaying the benefits and favors received are bonds that do not allow the free spirit to move freely.
