Sonnet 16. For the Tomb of Don Hernando de Guzmán (Soneto 16. Para la sepultura de Don Hernando de Guzmán) by Garcilaso De la Vega (1491/1503 – 1536).

Neither the hateful French arms
arrayed against my wrathful breast,
nor from well-guarded walls, with all their stores,
the darts and poisoned arrows hurled;

nor perilous skirmishes,
nor that fierce, resounding thunder
for Jupiter himself once forged
by Vulcan’s skillful hands,

could, though I offered myself ever more
to the dangers of cruel war,
take from my fate a single hour;

but an infection in the air, within one day alone,
took me from the world and buried me in you,
Parthenope, so far from my own land.

—

No las francesas armas odiosas
en contra puestas del airado pecho,
ni en los guardados muros con pertrecho
los tiros y saetas ponzoñosas,

no las escaramuzas peligrosas,
ni aquel fiero ruido contrahecho
de aquel que para Júpiter fue hecho
por manos de Vulcano artificiosas,

pudieron, aunque más yo me ofrecía
a los peligros de la dura guerra,
quitar una hora sola de mi hado;

mas infición de aire en solo un dia
me quitó al mundo y me ha en ti sepultado,
Parténope, tan lejos de mi tierra.
